Marvell acquires Polariton Technologies

Santa Clara - Marvell has announced the acquisition of the ETH spin-off Polariton Technologies, which commercializes plasmonics for electro-optical products. The takeover strengthens the end-to-end connectivity portfolio of the US supplier of semiconductor solutions used in data infrastructure applications.

(CONNECT)Marvell Technology, Inc., a supplier of semiconductor solutions for data infrastructures that is headquartered in the US State of California, has announced the takeover ofPolariton Technologiesin a companystatement. Polariton Technologies, based in Adliswil in the canton of Zurich, is a spin-off from the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), specializing in the development of high-speed, low-power plasmonics-based silicon photonics devices.

The acquisition strengthens Marvell’s end-to-end connectivity portfolio in the areas of electro-optics, photonics, switching and custom semiconductor solutions. The plasmonics technology developed by Polariton Technologies offers advanced modulation capabilities that enable continuous scaling of state-of-the-art optical interconnect platforms.

The background to this acquisition relates to the growing demand for bandwidth due to the scaling of Artificial Intelligence. Data center infrastructures therefore require increasingly powerful optical connections, especially for scale-across and data center interconnect (DCI) applications. Plasmonics for electro-optical products offers significant advantages over conventional silicon photonics, as it allows for higher-density optical connections and massively parallel operation with ultra-low energy consumption per bit.

“The addition of Polariton extends our optical roadmap with differentiated modulation technology and a highly specialized team. This investment reflects our commitment to innovation across multiple technology approaches as we continue to build on our leadership in high-speed connectivity”, comments Sandeep Bharathi, President of the Data Center Group at Marvell, in the statement. ce
