Research and Teaching at EPFL
At EPFL, Prof. Aziza Chaouni’s research through SONO Lab will explore the intersection of sustainable construction, material innovation, and heritage rehabilitation, with a particular focus on Africa and the Global South. The lab investigates low-carbon construction systems, bio- and geo-sourced materials, and climate-adaptive design strategies, while fostering knowledge transfer between South and North contexts.
Her teaching will center on sustainable construction in relation to climate change adaptation, with a strong emphasis on learning from resource-efficient and climate-responsive strategies developed in the Global South and examining how these approaches can inform Swiss and European practices. She will also teach courses and a project studio focused on the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of architectural heritage on the African continent, integrating real-world case studies into research-led design pedagogy.
