Salbris - Axpo subsidiary Urbasolar has won a tender to build a solar power plant for the French Ministry of Defense. A 42-megawatt-peak photovoltaic plant is to be constructed on the former military site in Salbris. A long-term power purchase agreement has also been signed.

(CONNECT)AxposubsidiaryUrbasolar, based in Montpellier, is constructing a photovoltaic plant with a peak capacity of 42 megawatts in Salbris, central France. The company has won a tender for this project from the FrenchMinistry of Defense, according to astatementfrom Axpo, which is headquartered in Baden in the canton of Aargau. In parallel with the construction of the plant, a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with a term of 30 years has been signed.

The project involves converting a former military site in Salbris into a solar power plant. According to the statement, the site has been unused since 2018. The solar power generated here is expected to cover 3.7 percent of the Ministry of Defense’s electricity needs. The photovoltaic plant in Salbris will generate more than 50,000 megawatt-hours per year, which corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of 10,724 households.

The project is the first of its kind in which the French government will use the renewable electricity generated to meet its own energy needs. “The project in Salbris proves that exemplary repurposing can transform a military site into a valuable resource for the region and for the country’s energy self-sufficiency,” explained Antoine Millioud, CEO of Urbasolar. “This synergy between our teams and those of the Ministry of Defense opens up new prospects for the large-scale and responsible deployment of solar energy at military sites.”

The construction of the solar plant will occupy 30 hectares of land, with the remaining land preserved as a type of protective forest with its own ecosystem. ce
