Renewable heat drives ewl’s growth

28.04.2026, 15:24 UhrLucerne - For 2025, ewl energie wasser luzern has posted a profit of 38 million Swiss francs. While lower energy prices and reduced natural gas sales pushed total revenue down by 3.8 percent to 374 million francs, revenue in the heating business segment rose significantly by 14 percent.

(CONNECT) Further progress has been made byewl energie wasser luzernin realizing its strategic shift toward a sustainable and regionally anchored energy supply. According to a statement from Lucerne’s energy supplier, it invested a total of 74.0 million francs in the expansion of renewable heat, grid and plant infrastructure as well as digitization in 2025.

Total revenue was impacted by lower energy prices and reduced natural gas sales. It fell by 3.8 percent to 373.5 million francs. Since operating expenses also decreased by 5.3 percent during the same period, profit rose slightly to 37.9 million francs. In the previous year, it had been 37.6 million.

In contrast, revenue in the heating business segment increased by 14 percent to 29.4 million francs. This was especially driven by network expansion, new neighborhood heating plants and numerous new connections. Heat is sourced 66 percent from the waste-to-energy plant, 8.2 percent from waste heat, 7.5 percent from lake water, 4.4 percent from heat pumps and 3.6 percent from wood chips and pellets. Natural gas now accounts for only 10.3 percent of the heat.

The strong results in both the heating and telecommunications business segments “show that ewl’s strategic direction is working and that our solutions meet the needs of our customers – sustainable, efficient and locally rooted,” explained CEO Patrik Rust.

The company is proposing a dividend of 6.9 million francs to the City of Lucerne at the Annual General Meeting. ce
