Authorities confiscate 12 horses in an unspecified location; future as happy Aiderbichlers
12 horses fought for bare survival
When we are asked by the authorities whether we can help with a confiscation, we always have to assume the worst case scenario. We have to expect to take in completely neglected animals - animals that no longer expect anything positive from humans. Their only purpose in life seemed to be to give birth to foals. When we picked up Macarena and her fellow sufferers, tears welled up in our eyes. The stable where they were kept was pitch black, filthy and filled with an acrid smell of urine that made it almost impossible to breathe. One look into the eyes of the animals broke our hearts. Thanks to the intervention of the authorities, the well-behaved mares were freed from their unworthy prison - and now have a future as happy now have a future as happy Aiderbichlers! 12 horses fought for survival
One year on: horse confiscation
People and animals alike were exhausted when twelve confiscated horses arrived at Gut Aiderbichl. Exactly one year ago, 40 horses that had been confiscated by the veterinary office were rescued from the stables. Gut Aiderbichl was one of the animal welfare organisations that was asked to assist with the horse rescue. We were able to take twelve horses with us and the other mares were distributed to other animal welfare organisations.
25 years of animal welfare - the horror of animal rescues has not changed
After almost 10,000 rescued animals, the animal rescuers at Gut Aiderbichl are probably used to a lot when it comes to getting animals out of their former homes. The sight of the horses was horrific for the staff and they realised that even after years of working in animal welfare, you don’t become hardened. The suffering of the horses horrified, angered and stunned them. There was a terrible stench in the stables. The horses’ faces looking over the stall doors were narrow and their eyes sad. The mares had obviously not been fed sufficiently for a long time, as the ribs were visible under the skin of every horse. Inflamed eyes, parasite infestation on the skin and in the body, cracked hooves, broken teeth – not a pretty sight and it smelled of heartache.
The horses needed immediate help and medical care
After their arrival, the horses were carefully acclimatised to their new surroundings and medical care was started immediately. Some of the horses were so badly affected by years of neglect that they had to be given regular medication. Gut Aiderbichl stands up for the weakest members of society – the animals. It was clear that the horses needed intensive and the best possible support in order to be able to lead a reasonably good life again.
A new life - The horses have found peace and are doing well
After a year at Gut Aiderbichl, we can say that they are doing really well after a few teething troubles. All the mares were severely underweight and some suffered from thrush. Some horses had severe eye infections, which have now healed. Apart from a few aches and pains, the horses are basically healthy. The animal carers had to work hard to build up the horses’ trust.
The start of each mare’s new life began with a new name
Macarena… will be 26 years old in a few weeks. She suffers from severe asthma and needs intensive medical treatment. Macarena is very sweet with the keepers and, together with her best friend Kalina, she simply joins in with any nonsense.
… is 27 years old and is still very afraid of contact. Generally, when something touches her body, she flinches and is frightened. Tami still needs a lot of love, patience and needs to build up trust, which she is already getting better at. She is curious and cuddly and is slowly getting to
