Football: Chelsea captain Millie Bright announces retirement after glittering career

The Tokyo 2020 Olympian has decided to hang up her boots with immediate effect, calling time on her 12-year career at Chelsea.

Millie Bright,Chelsea’s longest-serving player and former England international, has announced her retirement fromfootball, aged 32.

Bright decided to end her playing career on Wednesday (29 April), announcing her decision via a video on Chelsea’s social media accounts.

The centre-back, who competed atTokyo 2020withGreat Britain, departs from Chelsea as the west London club’s record appearance maker with 314 matches.

She spent 12 years at Stamford Bridge, capping a glittering career that saw her win 20 trophies, including eightWomen’s Super League(WSL) titles.

“I think, in life, we have to make decisions. And in football, we’re always given the answers, like we’re always told where to be, what to eat, what time to come to training,” a teary-eyed Bright said in avideo message.

“And I think I’m at a stage where I am ready to take control of my life… no one can tell you what’s right in this moment or when the time is right, but for me, I’m ready to hang up my boots.

“I’m not going anywhere. Don’t panic. There’s more to come,” she added.

Bright’s retirement ​caps a remarkable journey that began when she signed by Chelsea from Doncaster Belles in 2015.

She went on to set the record for most WSL appearances with 216, surpassingJordan Nobbs’previous mark of ​210 in November.

What’s next for Millie Bright after retirement?

Chelsea said in a statement that Bright will continue her association with the Blues, becoming a club ambassador and trustee of the Chelsea Foundation.

“I’m Chelsea through and through,” said the 32-year-old, who served as Chelsea’s captain for the last three seasons.

“I always said I will retire at this club… I’ve given everything on and off the pitch for the badge and I’m so proud to have done that for over a decade now.

“I’ve been playing injured for the last six years and I’m tired.

“I’m ready to venture off into life, and to do bigger things with the club and to still be a part of that is really, really special to me.”

Bright hadalready stepped awayfrom international football in October 2025, calling time on herLionessescareer, which saw her make 88 senior caps and win theWomen’s UEFA Euro 2022. She also led the team to the final of theFIFA Women’s World Cupthe following year.
