On 20 October, PTB and Berlin’s Charité university hospital celebrated the opening of a joint research center. Located on the Charité’s downtown campus in the Mitte district, the OPM-MEG center will host the first ever large-scale deployment of optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) for clinical research. OPMs represent the latest generation of sensors capable of measuring the extremely weak magnetic signals generated by human brain activity. They are now nearly as sensitive as the established…
Improved diagnosis of hepatitis D
Hepatitis D is a rare but severe form of viral hepatitis, affecting up to 19 million people worldwide. For diagnosis and treatment planning, the reliable detection of the viral load is crucial. However, established testing methods have limitations. A new method developed by PTB, based on digital PCR (dPCR) and requiring no calibrator, offers high specificity and reproducibility and could deliver significant improvements.

As part of the MyoQuant joint research project, an optically pumped magnetometer was developed that is able to measure the extremely weak and fast magnetic fields of muscle activity. Moreover, it was shown that commercially available magnetic shields and sensors enable magnetomyography measurements even outside of shielded rooms.
Executive Secretary of the Innovation Cluster for Health
PTB is among the top names in metrology worldwide. As the National Metrology Institute of Germany, PTB is Germany’s highest authority when it comes to correct and reliable measurements. Research and development work amounts to about two thirds of all of PTB’s activities.

Based on its research and development work, PTB provides a wide range of metrological services. The central task in this context – laid down by law – is to realize and to disseminate the units as accurately as possible. In this way, PTB ensures that uniform measures are used, not only in Germany, but throughout the world.
