Frauen in der Medizin – Ausstellung 'Women.Study.Medicine' im MTZ, TU Dresden; Heute ca. 70% der Medizinstudierenden in Dresden weiblich

Special exhibition at the MTZ until March 2027: "Women.Study.Medicine" — Carl Gustav Carus Faculty of Medicine — TU Dresden

Special exhibition at the MTZ until March 2027: "Women.Study.Medicine"

Exhibition opening at the MTZ: "Women.Study.Medicine"

How natural is it that women study medicine, conduct research and shape clinics? 120 years ago, this was anything but a given.

The exhibition "Women. Study. Medicine" tells the long and often rocky story of female doctors in Saxony and beyond: of women who had to go abroad in the 19th century in order to study medicine at all, of the first female medical students admitted in Germany and structural disadvantages despite formal equality in the GDR. Today, around 70 percent of medical students in Dresden are female, but the career barriers still exist - even if they are no longer as visible.

The exhibition by the Institute of History of Medicine is on display in the foyer of the Medical Theoretical Centre (MTZ) until March 2027. It presents the first female doctors in the region and their educational paths, describes historical aspects of the specialization and self-organization of female doctors and outlines their role during National Socialism. Another thematic focus is on the professional activities and career opportunities of female doctors in the GDR and the Dresden Medical Academy.

The exhibition "Frauen.Studium.Medizin" is supported by the Stiftung Hochschulmedizin, the Ostsächsische Sparkasse and the Deutscher Ärztinnenbund.
