Greenland Mines to help Finland’s circular economy in minerals
Skaergaard - Greenland Mines will help supply and study minerals for the Geological Survey of Finland’s GTK Mintec circular economy pilot plant. The cooperation will help the mining company recover as much value as possible from Skaergaard, a gold, palladium, platinum, and critical metals project in East Greenland.
(CONNECT) Converting ore tailings into reusable materials since the 1980s, theGTK Mintecplant in Outokumpu, Finland annually coordinates around 100 projects, including eight to 12 industrial-scale undertakings, related to primary ores and their secondary streams. Now officialls from Espoo-basedGeological Survey of Finland GTK, who run the plant will work withGreenland Minesfrom Omaha to study precious and critical metals extracted from Skaergaard, a mining project in East Greenland, said an April 23statement.
“Skaergaard is a complex, fine‑grained, multi‑metal layered intrusion,” said Greenland Mines President Bo Moller Stensgaard. “To unlock its full potential…we need a partner that can go deep into the mineralogy, petrology, and process design. For both institutional and retail investors, this should underline that Skaergaard is on a clear path towards becoming a technically robust, environmentally responsible, and strategically relevant operation.”
The agreement includes advanced mineralogical studies, gold deportment and hydro-separation studies, chemical analyses to optimize yields, hydrometallurgical testing, pilot‑scale processing, and tailings and extractive‑waste studies. Researchers will also examine conventional and cutting‑edge low‑emission processing methods to maximize the value of virgin and recycled materials.
The Geological Survey of Finland will provide “impartial research data,” said the survey’s director general Kimmo Tiilikainen. “Skaergaard is a geologically exceptional deposit, and we are excited to collaborate with Greenland Mines,” said Tiilikainen. “The collaboration will promote the efficient and sustainable utilization of metals and minerals.” ce
