Fußball, Macht und Protest: Die globale Politik der Weltmeisterschaft 2026

Die FIFA-Weltmeisterschaft 2026, die gemeinsam von Kanada, Mexiko und den Vereinigten Staaten ausgerichtet wird, wird die größte in der Geschichte sein und 48 Mannschaften aus aller Welt zusammenbringen, darunter viele aus dem Globalen Süden. Gerade auch in diesen Ländern ist Fußball auch über den Platz hinaus eng mit Politik, Gesellschaft und wirtschaftlichen Interessen verflochten.

Dieses GIGA Forum untersucht, wie Regierungen Fußball nutzen, um Stärke zu demonstrieren und internationales Ansehen zu gewinnen, aber auch, wie der Sport eine Plattform für öffentliche Unzufriedenheit, Protest und politische Mobilisierung bietet. Wer profitiert von diesem globalen Spektakel und wer trägt die Kosten? Welche Rolle spielt Fußball bei der Gestaltung politischer Stabilität, sozialer Spannungen und wirtschaftlicher Chancen?
