Swiss adults (15+) use tobacco or nicotine products in Switzerland; 28.2% overall use.

Tobacco and nicotine use, by product (age: 15+) | MonAM | FOPH

Tobacco and nicotine use, by product (age: 15+)

In 2025, 22.3% of the population in Switzerland used tobacco or nicotine products at least monthly, and 15.7% daily. Across all frequencies of use (including less than once a month), the figure is 28.2% of the population. Most widely used were cigarettes (15.2% at least monthly), followed by e-cigarettes, vapes or Puff Bars (4.1%) and heated tobacco products (3.3%). Overall, smoking was more common among men than women. However, young women aged 15–19 used e‑cigarettes, vapes and Puff Bars more frequently (12.2% at least monthly) than men in the same age group (6.6%).

This indicator is part of the Monitoring System Addiction and NCD (MonAM) of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).

While nicotine is still most frequently used in the form of tobacco-filled cigarettes, there is evidence of diversification in the use of tobacco and nicotine products (Notari, L. et al., 2026). The variety of products available has increased markedly in recent years. Many products are deliberately designed and marketed in such a way as to be attractive, particularly for young people, and may thus act as a gateway to nicotine dependence.

Tobacco use is a leading cause of numerous diseases, disability and premature death. Smoking harms almost every organ in the body, and is detrimental to the respiratory and cardiovascular systems in particular (FOPH, 2023). However, tobacco products for oral use are also highly addictive, damage the oral mucosa and contain carcinogenic substances. Even tobacco-free products such as e-cigarettes and other nicotine products contain harmful substances which increase the risk of lung and cardiovascular diseases. Some of the substances arising are also carcinogenic (FOPH, 2025). As these products all contain nicotine, they can create dependence.

The indicator is used to monitor trends in tobacco and nicotine use, supporting health promotion, prevention, early detection and early intervention.

The indicator shows the proportion of the population over 15 years of age using a tobacco or nicotine product – or specific types of product – either at least monthly or daily. In addition, all frequencies of use can be displayed (including less than once a month; cf. Chart 1). The second chart shows the prevalence of use by product category (cf. the categories listed below). The indicator is updated every 2 years.

The data comes from the online “Health and Lifestyle” survey conducted by the Tobacco Control Fund (TPF) and the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) in collaboration with the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) (n2023≈ 6000, n2024≈ 6000, n2025≈ 5800). In 2025, the question was:
