Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026: Gyaneshwari Yadav wins bronze in Gandhinagar

The Indian weightlifter won two medals in the women’s 53kg division, including a bronze in the overall category. Bindyarani Devi struck out in the 58kg division.

India’sGyaneshwari Yadavwon the bronze medal in the women’s 53kg event at theAsian Weightlifting Championships 2026in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, with a total lift of 194kg on Wednesday.

TheIndian weightlifterregistered a personal best 88kg in snatch and added 106kg - just one kg below her PB - in clean and jerk to finish third overall. Her total of 194kg matched her personal best.

Gyaneshwari was placed second in the snatch standings after successfully clearing 83kg, 86kg and 88kg across her three attempts and bagged the silver in the section.

In the clean and jerk, she lifted 103kg with her first effort before failing at 106kg. However, she successfully hoisted the weight with her final attempt to finish as the fifth-best lifter in the section and jumped up to third in the overall standings.

At the Asian Championships, separate medals are awarded for each of the twoweightliftingsections in addition to the overall lift.

The People’s Republic of China’s Zhao Jinlan won the overall gold medal with a total of 216kg (95kg+121kg), while Vietnam’s Huongnguyen Hoai claimed silver with 195kg (87kg+108kg).

Meanwhile, India’s Bindyarani Devi finished fifth in the women’s 58kg event after managing a total lift of 203kg.

A silver medallist at the continental meet from three years back, Bindyarani lifted 89kg in snatch and 114kg in clean and jerk.

She successfully cleared 85kg and 89kg in the snatch before failing to lift 91kg in her final attempt. In the clean and jerk, she opened with 114kg and then made two unsuccessful attempts at 118kg.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s Kim Il-gyong won the gold medal with a total of 230kg (105kg+125kg). China’s Wei Tingna claimed silver with 225kg (101kg+124kg), while Vietnam’s Tamquang Thi secured bronze after lifting 221kg (99kg+122kg).

India also blanked out in the men’s 65kg event as Raja Muthupandi finished seventh with a total lift of 293kg.

He registered 129kg in snatch and 164kg in clean and jerk. Muthupandi successfully lifted 126kg, faltered with 129kg before successfully registering the same mark in the snatch section.

In the clean and jerk, he opened with a successful 164kg lift but could not complete his next two attempts at 168kg.

China’s He Yueji won the gold medal with a total of 329kg (146kg+183kg). North Korea’s Jinpak Myong claimed silver with 321kg (144kg+177kg), while China’s Ding Hongjie secured bronze after lifting 319kg (145kg+174kg).

On Monday. Komal Kohar, competing in place of injured Olympic medallistMirabai Chanu, had opened India’s account with a couple of bronze medals in the women’s 48kg event in the overall and clean and jerk section.

The Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026 is being held in India for only the second time. New Delhi hosted the event previously in 1982.

A 16-member Indian team is competing at the continental championships in Gandhinagar.

The meet, which ends on May 17, will continue on Thursday. India’s Ajith Narayana (men’s 71kg), Valluri Ajaya Babu (men’s 79kg) and Nirupama Devi Seram (women’s 63kg) will be in action.
