Indian Athletics Series 2026: Returning Harmilan Bains finishes third in debut 10000m race

Back in action after a two-year injury layoff, Harmilan Bains opened a new chapter in her career with a strong 10000m debut.

Former national record holder Harmilan Bains marked her return to competitive track and field action with a third-place finish in her women’s 10000m debut at the eighth leg of the Indian Athletics Series 2026 in Pune on Sunday.

Competing for the first time in two years and over a distance longer than 1500m for the first time in her career, Harmilan clocked 36:35.45 to finish just behind Ravina Gayakwad (36:34.55) and Sanjivani Jadhav (36:35.33).

The 27-year-old Indian athlete , a double silver medallist at the Asian Games 2023 in the 800m and 1500m, has shifted focus to longer distances after recovering from hamstring and ankle injuries that kept her out of action.

However, Harmilan Bains will have to clear the Asian Games qualifying standard of 33:50.00 set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for the 10000m race at Aichi-Nagoya 2026.

Harmilan’s previous competitive outing came in Birmingham in June 2024, where she clocked 4:19.31 in the 1500m for second place.

In the men’s shot put, Samardeep Singh Gill topped the field with an effort of 18.64m, while Aishwarya Mishra won the women’s 400m title in 54.22s.

The men’s javelin throw saw Manoj Kumar J emerge victorious with a best effort of 75.18m, ahead of Uttam Balasaheb Patil (74.40m) and Nitesh Yadav (69.55m).

The Pune meet was part of the 16-leg Indian Athletics Series introduced by the AFI for the 2026 season . The meet scheduled to be held in Assam on Saturday was cancelled.

The one-day competition featured a full slate of track and field finals across men’s and women’s events.

The Indian Athletics Series will resume next week in Ludhiana.
