Hosts India completed a clean sweep at the inaugural World Yogasana Championship 2026 , finishing with 114 medals, including 102 gold, at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad on Monday.
India’s haul showcased their dominance at the five-day competition, which featured 522 athletes from 79 countries. A total of 31 nations won at least one medal, while 10 countries secured at least one gold.
Japan finished a distant second in the medal standings with three gold, three silver and five bronze medals. Argentina claimed third place thanks largely to the exploits of Nabila Barraza, who emerged as the most successful athlete of the championships with two gold and three silver medals.
Nepal finished fifth in the medal table but was the second-most successful contingent in terms of total medals won, collecting 52 medals comprising one gold, 36 silver and 15 bronze. Uzbekistan also impressed with a tally of 25 medals, including one gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze.
India fielded a 122-member contingent across six age categories - sub-Junior (10-14 years), junior (14-18 years), senior (18-28 years), senior A (28-35 years), senior B (35-45 years) and senior C (45-55 years).
The championships were held from June 4 to 8 and featured competitions in traditional yogasana, artistic single, artistic pair, artistic group and rhythmic pair disciplines. Athletes also competed in specialised categories including forward bend, back bend, twisting body, hand balance, leg balance and supine events.
Organised by Yogasana Bharat in association with World Yogasana and the Indian Olympic Association, the event marked a significant milestone for the sport, which has gained increasing recognition in recent years.
Derived from the Sanskrit words yuj (to unite) and asana (body posture), yogasana is a competitive adaptation of yoga in which athletes are judged on flexibility, balance, endurance, stability and control while performing a series of postures.
With growing efforts to promote indigenous Indian sports, yogasana was included in the Khelo India Youth Games 2021 and later featured at the National Games 2025 in Uttarakhand.
