The Hurricanes shut out the Golden Knights 3-0 on the road in Game 6 to capture their first championship since 2006. Jordan Staal was named playoff MVP.

Carolina stormed through the NHL playoffs like a hurricane.

The Hurricanes beat the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 to win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2006 on Sunday (14 June) and reach the summit of ice hockey .

Behind goals from Taylor Hall , Jackson Blake and Nikolaj Ehlers , Carolina lifted the cup for the second time in franchise history, capping a dominant post-season run that saw them finish 16-3, having been down 2-1 in the series against Vegas.

Only the 1987-88 Edmonton Oilers, who went 16-2, have enjoyed a better record in the playoffs.

The 37-year-old Jordan Staal was named playoff MVP. He became the oldest recipient of the Conn Smythe Trophy, and his 17 years in between championships was the longest in NHL history.

“That’s a lot of years,” Staal said. “It’s amazing. This is something I’ve been going after ever since we got the first one. You want to win it again and again and again.

“What a feeling, what a battle.”

Rod Brind’Amour was Carolina’s captain the last time they won the title, and now he’s done it as coach.

“It felt great. Just to see the boys,” Brind’Amour said. “This is what hockey is about. It’s the ultimate team sport.

“This just didn’t happen this year. These guys have been doing this for eight years. It finally came through.”

Brandon Bussi registered his first career playoff shutout with 22 stops. Hall opened the scoring 3:47 into the game; Blake doubled the lead in the second period before Ehlers scored into an empty net to punctuate the win.

The Hurricanes’ Jaccob Slavin became only the second U.S. player to win the Stanley Cup and the Olympic gold medal in the same season.

“This year has been crazy. Thankful, grateful, and it’s awesome,” Slavin said. “It’s been a long journey. I love being a ‘Cane. We’ve worked a long time for this.”
