Backing up his impressive early season form with a non-wind legal 9.72 seconds, the U.S. sprint star delivers on Sunday.

Kenny Bednarek was simply a class above in the men’s 100m at the LA Grand Prix 2026 on Sunday (14 June).

Overcoming a slightly sluggish start, the 27-year-old athletics star hit his stride and never looked back, breaking clear to take the win in 9.72 seconds.

The world lead will not belong to him, however, as he had a tailwind of +2.4m

s. Nigerian Kayinsola Ajayi 's 9.84 from the NCAA East Regionals on 29 May still stands as the season's top time.

“I already knew coming in here that if executed, I was going to do quite good,” he told Olympics.com after the race. “It felt pretty easy, so that's good for the rest of the season.”

In fact, he might have been the only person at the University of Southern California’s Katherine B. Loker Track Stadium not surprised by his winning time.

“I knew I was in 9.8 shape,” Bednarek added. “So the 9.7 makes sense since it was a little bit windy, but I think I’m in 9.7 shape – if it was wind-legal – for sure.”

Four-time world champion Christian Coleman was also in superb form, finishing second in 9.84, followed by Ghana’s Abdul-Rasheed Saminu (9.88).

“I just came back from injury,” an upbeat Saminu said. “It feels amazing to be able to compete with these big dogs down here, so I’m happy about that.”

His time was more than enough to best regional rival Letsile Tebogo , who failed to find the same sort of top-end speed under the toasty California sun to place fifth at 9.95.

In other men's races, Olympian Chris Bailey earned the approval of the partisan crowd in the 400m, streaking to victory in 44.57, with Jamal Britt notching another home victory in the 110m hurdles, clocking 12.99 to edge out reigning world champion Cordell Tinch .

U.S. middle distance star Brandon Miller followed up his 800m win at LA Track Fest with another empathic victory (1:43.94), basking in the full glory of Los Angeles two years ahead of the Olympic Games LA28 .

“It's exciting that the Olympics are going to be here in two years,” he said. “The fans here love track and field, and they surely deserve an Olympics.”
