The North Geismar approach: motivating people, maximizing performance

Since 2022, Site Manager and Toluene Di-isocyanate (TDI) Value Chain Production Director Vinit Chilekar has helped shape a culture rooted in motivation, accountability, and operational excellence at BASF’s North Geismar site.

Born and raised in Mumbai, India, Vinit grew up in a large, close-knit family surrounded by engineers – an environment that sparked his early curiosity about how things work . As a child, he often took apart his toys to understand them, then challenged himself to put them back together again. That curiosity, combined with a natural inclination for hands-on problem solving, ultimately led him to pursue chemical engineering following a successful internship in the field.

After completing his bachelor’s degree in India, Vinit moved to the Netherlands to earn his master’s degree and later his Ph.D. in chemical engineering. Shortly after graduating, he joined BASF in 2007.

Today, Vinit is based in Geismar, Louisiana, serving in a dual role as Production Director for the TDI value chain within BASF’s Monomers division, and Site Manager for the North Geismar site, which is also home to BASF’s Performance Materials division. In this position, he oversees three major production facilities while leading a team of nearly 100 employees . His role bridges operational performance, infrastructure stewardship, and people leadership.

Two decades of leadership at BASF

Vinit began his BASF career in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and has since held a range of roles in process development and technology across Germany and Belgium. Each new opportunity brought fresh perspectives and experiences .

“ With every new role at BASF came a move to another country ,” Vinit explains. “ I was in Germany, then Belgium, back to Germany, again to Belgium, and now the U.S. Throughout these different opportunities, I’ve gained invaluable experience across many layers of the company .”

In 2022, he relocated to North Geismar to take on his current role. One of his early challenges was defining the scope of a newly created position that combines site leadership with value chain responsibility.

“ No matter the job title, my focus is always on the people ,” he says. “At the same time, we need to be cost-efficient, meet production targets, maintain our infrastructure, and ensure site services like safety, logistics, and HR operate effectively .”

Over time, Vinit has developed a leadership style centered on empowerment and accountability. He encourages team members to always take ownership and actively contribute solutions . “ When someone brings a problem, I ask them to come with potential solutions as well ,” he explains. “ That way, we can work together when solving it .”

He also credits a piece of advice from early in his leadership journey: “ There are many things in the world that can demotivate people. I don’t want to be one of them. That mindset has stayed with me. Recognition and appreciation go a long way in keeping teams engaged .”

Driving performance through meaningful challenges

A key part of Vinit’s approach is giving employees opportunities to stretch beyond their day-to-day responsibilities through targeted projects and initiatives.

At North Geismar, the team maintains a pipeline of improvement ideas and selects key priorities each year . These projects span areas such as profitability, safety, and energy performance. Employees are encouraged to lead these efforts from concept through execution.

Many initiatives also advance sustainability goals. For example, recent improvements in steam optimization have significantly reduced consumption and enhanced overall energy efficiency across the site.

Digitalization is another focus area. The site has introduced tablets for operator rounds and implemented Shiftbook, a software tool that replaces manual logs with digital tracking of operations, safety procedures, and equipment status. Most notably, the team has adopted PlantGPT to enable advanced, data-driven insights at North Geismar. Strong adoption has placed Vinit’s plants among BASF’s leading users of the tool, reflecting a broader shift toward digitally enabled operations.

Digital advances support and enhance North Geismar’s existing priorities, including a steadfast commitment to safety.

Safety as a non-negotiable priority

For Vinit, safety underpins every aspect of operations. “Safety is a fundamental value that guides everything we do,” he says. “ Protecting our license to operate depends on keeping our operations safe for everyone, every day .”

One of his key initiatives at North Geismar was revitalizing the Exposure Reduction Program , which focuses on identifying and mitigating workplace risks. The program emphasizes proactive observation and shared accountability across the workforce.

The results have been significant. Employee engagement has increased, along with the number of safety observations recorded. In 2025, the site exceeded its safety contact targets by a substantial margi n. That performance was recognized by the Louisiana Chemical Association, who named North Geismar the state’s top safety performer under its SAFE Program .

To reinforce a strong safety culture, the site also holds weekly safety discussions and recognizes employees who demonstrate outstanding safety leadership. “These practices may seem small,” Vinit notes, “but they make a real difference. People feel valued, and that drives continued improvement.”

Vinit’s leadership at North Geismar exemplifies the best of BASF — putting people and safety first while driving performance and innovation.
