Commonwealth Games 2026: Glasgow Arena erupts as two Scots on pommel horse podium, Carroll claims gold while McClenaghan struggles

Day one of the apparatus finals at Glasgow 2026 also saw Commonwealth champions Whitehouse, Fontaine, McDonald and Dolci crowned.

Five Commonwealth Games champions were crowned at Glasgow 2026 on Monday (27 July) on the first day of two of the artistic gymnastics apparatus finals.

Luke Whitehouse secured Team England’s first gold medal of the gymnastics competition in Scotland with top spot on men’s floor exercise . Canada had two champions on the day in Lia-Monica Fontaine who completed her set of medals with gold on women’s vault , while Jordan Carroll was ecstatic to claim the men’s pommel horse title in a stacked field that included world, Olympic and European champion Rhys McClenaghan .

Kate McDonald claimed a second gold medal of the Games, this time on the uneven bars, after the women also won the team title on Saturday. Felix Dolci , a men’s team gold medallist on Friday, claimed the still rings title.

The first apparatus final of the afternoon was won by Whitehouse, the world silver medallist on floor. He performed his always spectacular triple back somersault to whoops of delight from the exuberant Monday afternoon crowd, finishing cleanly to score a huge 14.566. The Paris 2024 Olympian finished more than half a mark ahead of silver medallist, Canada’s Rene Cournoyer on 13.966. Australia’s James Hardy finished third (13.433).

“One of my main targets coming into this competition was to get the title on floor, add another one to the collection,” Whitehouse told Olympics.com, alluding to his three European titles on the apparatus. “So to do what I did today, after having that fall yesterday in the all-round, yes I’m over the moon.”

Fontaine was having quite the Commonwealth Games debut, winning gold on the women’s vault with a huge Yurchenko double full first vault, and a Yurchenko half-on front-layout half for the second. The average of the two vaults is taken for the final score leaving the silver and bronze medallist from Glasgow with a winning score of 14.000.

Abigail Martin who next competes for GB in Croatia at the European Championships in Zagreb starting 13 August, secured silver for England with 13.799 while in an unusual head-to-head, Wales’s Roper twins, Abigail and Emily, competed in the same final.

With little to pick between them, it was Abigail who claimed the final podium place with a score of 13.433 to fourth-placed Emily’s 13.283. However, Emily matched her twin on the next apparatus for women, the uneven bars, securing bronze. Ellie Black ’s sensational routine secured her a ninth Commonwealth Games medal but it was McDonald who emerged on top.

“I’ve done a lot of routines where I’ve bombed in the finals and I’ve learned a lot from them, so I was just focusing. I did want this medal really badly but I was just trusting the process, trusting my training, thinking about my cues, everything but the medal. But I just enjoyed being out there. I absolutely love watching everyone’s routines and supporting everyone.”

During the pommel horse final, a huge groan emanated from the crowd at the Glasgow International Arena as home favourite and history-making men’s all-around champion Reuben Ward scored 14.966 to the then leader’s 15.000 set by Jordan Carroll . The Canadian emerged triumphant even after World, Olympic and European champion Rhys McClenaghan stepped up as the last performer.

The Northern Ireland-born McClenaghan uncharacteristically struggled during his difficulty-laden routine and finished out of the medals in sixth place with 13.000.

The Scots were cheering by competitions end however, when Ward finished second on pommels but was joined on the podium by compatriot Cameron Lynn to ecstatic scenes in the arena (13.833). Before today Scotland had only ever won one medal in gymnastics as the Commonwealth Games, and that was Ward’s gold in the men’s all-around competition. Now the nation has three.

“It was even just great being in the final with Cam, because he’s a great team-mate and I love him a lot,” Ward told Olympics.com after quick rendition of ‘No Scotland, no party’ from the happy pair.

“I mean a massive score from the Canadian, so I just tried to beat it, not quite, but then Cam getting the bronze just made up for that entirely. So I’m very proud of him and I’m proud of Scotland, man.”

“I was just excited watching it even before I’d gone up,” said a beaming Lynn. “I mean, a 15.000 and then a 14.966. I mean, what a final. It’s absolutely amazing. It’s world class. It’s some of the best pommel workers in the world battling out there, and yeah, and to be a part of that, what a special moment.”

Carroll was also blown away by the experience, with the gold medal the cherry on the top.

The Canadian duo also were also thrilled to finish 1-2 in the men’s rings final with Dolci beating team-mate William Emard to top spot.

“It feels great,” Dolci told Olympics.com afterwards. “Missing the medal in the podium on floor, I was definitely not expecting that to be honest with you, but, it happens, right?

“It’s not my first failure and definitely or most likely not my last, but being able to get back once again on rings and do what I do best and come home with the gold medal is great.

“I’m super happy and stoked also that we have a double podium with Will standing on my right.”

“I’m really proud of myself,” Emard told us. “Honestly, I was not in the best mental state before coming here. There’s a personal matter that popped up yesterday, but really happy that I could put the personal thing aside just to perform.

“I have another day tomorrow with parallel bars and high bar with this guy, so I’m just really happy and excited to get another chance to be here tomorrow morning.”
