The men’s 100m is set to be one of the marquee events in athletics at the 2026 Commonwealth Games , with an outstanding field all vying for a coveted spot on the podium in Glasgow on Tuesday (28 July).
Before the medals are decided, however, the sprinters must first battle it out in the semi-finals. Several of the pre-event favourites received automatic qualification and will make their first appearance in Tuesday evening’s semi-finals after bypassing the opening round on Monday (27 July).
The men’s semi-finals begin at 19:10 on 28 July , with the final scheduled for 21:20 .
The women’s 100m final follows at 21:40 .
Among those entering directly into the semi-finals are South Africa’s Gift Leotlela , Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi , Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake , Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala , Canada’s Jerome Blake , Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme , and Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy .
The opening round took place in typical Glasgow fashion, with cool temperatures and swirling winds making fast times difficult to come by. Nevertheless, the performances ensured there will be no shortage of challengers heading into the next round.
Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati produced the quickest performance of the opening round, cruising to victory in exactly 10.00 (+1.2), equalling his season’s best and becoming the fastest heat winner in Commonwealth Games history, surpassing fellow Ghanaian Abdul-Rasheed Saminu ’s previous mark of 10.01 (+1.9).
2025 world indoor 60m champion Jeremiah Azu , in Team Wales kit this time, also looked comfortable as he controlled his heat to advance in 10.10 (+1.7).
Mojela Koneshe of Lesotho, meanwhile, was determined to get to the next round, and posted a national record time of 10.07 (+1.4) to prove it, despite the windy conditions.
Australia’s Edward Osei-Nketia also impressed, finishing second in his heat in 10.07 , matching England’s Elliot Jones ’ and Koneshe’s time.
One thing is for sure: there will be little room for error before the battle for Commonwealth gold unfolds under the lights later in the evening.
