Commonwealth Games 2026 weightlifting: Valluri Ajaya Babu, Gyaneshwari Yadav, Bindyarani Devi lift India’s medal haul

Ajaya Babu set a Games record in snatch for his silver, Gyaneshwari Yadav registered a personal best for her silver and Bindyarani Devi bagged her second CWG medal.

India enjoyed another productive day in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Monday, winning three medals, with Valluri Ajaya Babu narrowly missing gold in the men’s 79kg competition after finishing just 1kg behind Malaysia’s Muhammad Erry Hidayat.

Ajaya Babu set a Commonwealth Games record of 149kg in the snatch before lifting 181kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 330kg at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow. Hidayat secured gold with 331kg after a Games-record clean and jerk of 184kg, while Chris Murray claimed bronze with 325kg (148kg+177kg).

Earlier in the day, Gyaneshwari Yadav opened India’s account on the second day of competition by claiming silver in the women’s 53kg event on her CWG debut.

The 23-year-old, who moved up from the 49kg category to accommodate Mirabai Chanu, produced a personal-best total of 199kg (88kg in snatch and 111kg in clean and jerk).

She was flawless throughout, clearing all three snatch attempts at 82kg, 85kg and 88kg before successfully lifting 103kg, 107kg and a personal-best 111kg in the clean and jerk.

Her final lift briefly established new Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records in the clean and jerk before Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih eclipsed it moments later with 113kg.

Didih finished with a Games-record total of 206kg (93kg+113kg) to take gold, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx claimed bronze with 178kg (83kg+95kg).

Later, Bindyarani Devi added bronze in the women’s 58kg event to secure her second successive Commonwealth Games medal. She had won silver in the women’s 55kg event at Birmingham 2022 .

In Glasgow, the Manipur weightlifter totalled 199kg (87kg in snatch and 112kg in clean and jerk), successfully clearing all three snatch attempts before making her decisive clean and jerk lift on the second attempt.

Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal successfully defended her title with a Commonwealth Games record total of 229kg (103kg+126kg), while Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau took silver with 215kg (94kg+121kg).

India have now won six weightlifting medals at Glasgow 2026 - one gold, four silver and a bronze.

On Sunday, Mirabai Chanu shattered the Commonwealth Games records in the snatch, clean and jerk and total on her way to gold in the women’s 49kg event. Rishikanta Singh claimed silver in the men’s 60kg, while Muthupandi Raja added another silver in the men’s 65kg.
