Sam Williamson completed a sprint breaststroke double at the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026 on Monday (27 July), adding the 50 metres swimming title to the 100 metres gold he won earlier in the event. The Australian touched in 26.50 to beat top seed Michael Houlie , the South African settling for silver in 26.77, with Adam Ramsay-Peaty third in 26.94. Houlie got off to an incredible start but Williamson closed with an extraordinary final 25 metres to claw his way to the title. For Ramsay-Peaty, it was bronze for the second time in Glasgow. The triple Olympic champion, who has held the 50 metres world record since 2017, could not reclaim the top of the podium, though he did turn the tables on 18-year-old Filip Nowacki , the Jersey teenager who had edged him for silver in the 100 metres. Nowacki was fifth this time. Williamson had carried the extra weight of the 100 title into the shorter sprint. "I definitely felt significantly more pressure," Williamson said. "Coming off the 100, knowing there was going to be a target on my back and a little more pressure – that's something I thrive under." For a swimmer who feared he might never pull on the green and gold again, the double meant more than the winning. "Just having the opportunity to put the green and gold on again was something I didn't think I'd ever have the opportunity to do," he said, referencing a ruptured patella that had thrown his career into uncertainty last year. "To come home with two of these little medals in my back pocket, it just makes it even more special." Commonwealth Games 2026: Swimming results – complete list Ramsay-Peaty: "That was absolutely my last individual Commonwealth" Ramsay-Peaty confirmed afterwards that he had swum his last individual race at a Commonwealth Games. "I know I said it in Birmingham, but that was absolutely my last individual Commonwealth," he said. "Tonight, I just went out there and enjoyed it, really enjoyed it, but we just weren't fast enough, we weren't good enough, and we have to look at why." Ramsay-Peaty admitted he didn't feel that the full fruits of his training effort in Glasgow. "I am working way too hard. If those results were how much I am working then they would be a lot better," he told the BBC . "I need to look at that and adjust course because we are sailing in some rough seas right now and it is not sustainable. I have come back from worse and we will see where we end up." The 31-year-old has raced this season while balancing family life, and no longer measures himself the way he once did. "I've been that person who wins all the time, and it costs you pretty much everything," he said. "I wouldn't say it's worth it now." Two bronzes, with the relays still to come, in his first championship back since Paris 2024. "I'd say that's a success," he said. "I'm not going to be too hard on myself. Not anymore."
