The teenaged superstar backed up his indoor win from earlier this year with a commanding victory in New York City on Sunday (26 July), running away from the field in 1:43.48.
There’s no stopping 17-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus .
His breakout 12 months continued Sunday (26 July) at the 2026 USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships , where the reigning world indoor champion claimed his first outdoor national title in the men’s 800m, clocking a 1:43.48 for the win.
“I’ve been working all year for this; I really wanted to be the U.S. indoor and outdoor champ - that was my main goal,” Lutkenhaus told reporters after his triumph.
“To be able to achieve that… it’s really special to have been able to have done it.”
It was a year ago that Lutkenhaus, then little-known in elite athletics , announced his arrival at the U.S. Championships, finishing in second place.
But Sunday at Icahn Stadium in New York City he looked like an athlete in command, breaking away from the pack over the final 250 meters - and winning by more than a second over runner-up Wes Ferguson (1:44.55).
Hobbs Kessler was third in 1:45 flat.
It marked the final race of the season for Lutkenhaus, who is set to forego September’s inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest as he returns home to Texas for his senior year of high school.
“I’m done racing for a while now,” Lutkenhaus said, expecting not to be on the competitive track again until the 2027 indoor season.
“I really wanted this one to last for a little bit,” he added with a smile. “So that’s exactly what [has happened].”
Lutkenhaus opened 2026 with a U.S. indoor title in nearby Staten Island before becoming the youngest individual medallist in World Athletics Indoor Championships history - doing so with a victory in Poland.
He hasn’t slowed down since: He clocked a world lead 1:42.08 at the Oslo Diamond League last month, beating reigning Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi along the way.

Cooper Lutkenhaus finishes 2026 season on a high
There is plenty of athletics action to come in August and September, including the European Championships , the Diamond League Final and the aforementioned Ultimates.
But Lutkenhaus is playing the long game, clearly he and his team with LA 2028 in mind - with the home Games less than two years away.
“I just knew with this [being the] last race for basically six months - until next indoor season - I was like, ‘I really want to end it on a bang,’” Lutkenhaus said.
“I just really wanted to come out here and give it everything I had because I’m not going to have an effort like this for a while.”
Lutkenhaus rated his first year as a pro a “9.5 out of 10,” saying he’ll have to wait until 2027 to reveal that little percentage missing.
But the growth for the 17 year old? It’s been exponential.
“I’ve grown a lot, honestly,” he said. “When you start something brand new, you think of all the things that could possibly go wrong. But… I felt like I just kept getting a little bit better throughout the year.”
