Innovation at InnoTrans 2026: "New Urban Track" system solution sets new standards in urban rail transport

At InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin, voestalpine Railway Systems will present its "New Urban Track" system solution, a newly developed track superstructure system for trams and light rail systems. The integrated system was specifically designed for embedded tracks in urban areas and addresses key challenges such as high wear, costly maintenance, and increasing demands for availability, noise, and vibration reduction.

A system reimagined for urban spaces

"New Urban Track" combines two key innovations in a holistic system solution:

New 65G1 grooved rail profile with increased wear reserves, a wider rail head for modern wheel profiles, and a design that allows ultrasonic testing down to the rail foot, significantly improving condition monitoring.

Maintenance-friendly support point solution with permanently accessible rail fastening for efficient rail replacement with minimal intervention in the asphalt or concrete surface.

The system is complemented by a modular design , elasticity via rubber rail foot cover, tension clamps (G9 clip) and a high degree of pre-assembly for short construction times and rapid re-accessibility.

Reduced rail wear and lower replacement costs

For railway operators and cities, the "New Urban Track" system offers decisive advantages:

Significantly reduced wear on rails and wheels

Lower maintenance and replacement costs

Improved cost-effectiveness throughout the entire life cycle

At the same time, the system contributes to quieter and more sustainable urban mobility through adjustable elasticity and excellent stray current insulation.

Successfully deployed under real-world conditions

"New Urban Track" has already been tested under real-world conditions in Graz. The pilot operation confirms the system design with regard to load, wear, and interaction between the vehicle and the track.

With “New Urban Track,” voestalpine Railway Systems will demonstrate at InnoTrans 2026 how innovative system solutions can make urban rail transport more sustainable, economical, and easier to maintain. Through the intelligent combination of a wear-optimized rail profile and maintenance-optimized infrastructure , the system sets new standards for modern tramway track systems.

The InnoTrans is regarded as THE most important international trade fair for transportation technology and takes place every two years at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. To mark its 30th anniversary, voestalpine Railway Systems — the world’s leading provider of complete railway infrastructure systems — will showcase its latest developments in digital system solutions.

Experience System Performance on Track ® from September 22–25 in Hall 21b, Booth No. 150.
