Colombia and Argentina make South American Cup podium with Empowerment – FIVB

FIVB Volleyball Empowerment beneficiaries Colombia and Argentina (pictured in the main photo; CSV – Confederación Sudamericana de Voleibol) celebrated silver and bronze, respectively, at the CSV Women’s Volleyball South American Cup that ended on Sunday in Lima. Brazil triumphed as champions of the continental competition.

The Federacion Colombiana de Voleibol has so far been allocated a total of USD 399,000 in FIVB Volleyball Empowerment coach support for their national volleyball teams, in addition to another USD 92,500 in volleyball equipment and USD 6,000 for a national team coach development knowledge transfer program. The Colombian women’s national team is guided by Brazilian coach Guilherme Schmitz. The Federacion del Voleibol Argentino has been granted USD 342,000 in targeted coach support for their women’s national volleyball team, in addition to another USD 18,000 in knowledge transfer programs from FIVB Volleyball Empowerment.

In Pool B of the CSV Women’s Volleyball South American Cup in Peru, Colombia won all of their three matches to top the standings, while Argentina finished pool runners-up on a 2-1 win-loss record, as they both advanced to the semifinals. Colombia went on to master a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-13) sweep of their duel with Chile, progressed to the final and secured a spot on the podium with at least a silver medal.

Argentina handed Pool A winners Brazil their only set loss of the tournament and later bounced back from their 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 28-26) defeat in the semifinal with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-20) shutout of Chile in the bronze medal game.

Brazil completed their victorious march through the competition with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-22) win over Colombia in the gold medal showdown.

Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador, in that order, took the places from fourth to eighth in the final standings.

Brazil’s 30-year-old opposite Sabrina Machado was honored as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. Setter Maria Alejandra Marin (Colombia), opposite Bianca Cugno (Argentina), outside hitters Karina Barbosa (Brazil) and Brenda Lobaton (Peru), middle blockers Valerin Carabali (Colombia) and Lanna Gomes (Brazil), and libero Carla Ruz (Chile) were selected on the Dream Team.
