Fiji superstar Taniela Tuisuva Rainibogi breaks Commonwealth Games record in the men’s 110kg to take gold ahead of England’s Tchatchet, while Canada’s Xavier Lusignan secures bronze.
Cyrille Tchatchet II , a former IOC Refugee Athlete Scholarship holder, won a weightlifting silver at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games , 12 years after fleeing the Cameroon team camp from the 2014 edition in the same city.
The Team England athlete finished with a combined score of 374kg (166kg snatch + 208kg clean & jerk) to place second in the men’s 110kg category on Thursday (30 July).
Fiji superstar Taniela Tuisuva Rainibogi, a bronze medallist last time out at Birmingham 2022, needed a Commonwealth Games record total of 378kg to beat Tchatchet .
Canada’s Xavier Lusignan claimed bronze with a total of 356kg.
“I’ve been through quite a lot,” Tchatchet told Olympics.com , reflecting on the period in which he also became homeless for two months.
Stretching his fingers which had been cramping throughout the competition, a condition that had stopped him getting a medal at Birmingham 2022, the 30-year-old continued: “My journey wasn’t straightforward.
“I was desperate to get a Commonwealth Games medal. I had to dig deep today to eventually complete those lifts and I’m very, very pleased.
“I succeeded in making all my lifts and achieved six from six, which is the first time I’ve actually done that on an international platform.”
Back to work as a psychiatric nurse on Monday, the Walsall resident - who competed for the IOC Refugee Olympic Team at Tokyo 2020 - will now take some time to enjoy some of the other sports on offer in Glasgow.
However, Tchatchet is already eyeing the next edition of the Commonwealth Games in India, at Ahmedabad 2030 .
