Serena Williams and Cheryl Miller also included on Obama’s list of his four greatest female athletes.
Katie Ledecky , one of swimming ’s all-time greats, and Simone Biles , the most decorated gymnast in history, were picked by former United States President Barack Obama on his ‘Mount Rushmore’ of women’s sports.
The Mount Rushmore National Memorial, a massive sculpture carved into the mountain in the Black Hills region of South Dakota, is famous for its colossal 60-foot stone carvings of four US Presidents.
Derived from that, a ‘Mount Rushmore’ list denotes the ultimate top four picks in a specific category.
As well as Ledecky and Biles, Obama’s list of his top four female athletes included tennis legend Serena Williams , a four-time Olympic gold medallist, and Cheryl Miller , the Los Angeles 1984 basketball champion.
On Ledecky, who has 14 Olympic medals, including nine golds, Obama said: “People are sleeping on her…when you look at the records she has racked up.”
The 44th US President further showered praise on Biles, the seven-time Olympic gold medallist, saying “nobody can really dispute” her greatest of all time (GOAT) status.
