The Australian led from start to finish in 1:45.22, as James Guy and Matt Richards tie for silver behind him.

From lane one, Australia’s Kai Taylor led every length and won the men’s 200m freestyle swimming final at the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026 on Wednesday (29 July), the Australian leading from start to finish to touch in 1:45.22.

Behind him, the race for silver ended in a draw. England’s James Guy and Wales’ Matt Richards both touched in 1:45.72 to share it with no bronze awarded.

“I love an outside lane. I made my first-ever team in 2023 from lane eight,” Taylor said. “It was almost forthcoming that I was in this lane again, lane one, and I managed to get my hand on the wall first.”

Taylor had qualified as the seventh-fastest and swum from the outside in lane one. He turned first at the 100 in 50.02 and held on for the win, holding off compatriots Harrison Turner (1:45.93) and Sam Short (1:45.94), fourth and fifth.

“If you’ve got a lane, you’ve got a chance, and that’s what I’ve always told myself,” Taylor said. “I backed my training and thought, you know what, I’m not gonna have any regrets. I didn’t want to look back and think I could have gone out harder. I just managed to hold on.”

Guy, a three-time Olympic gold medal winner, had led the qualifiers into the final.
