Stadler to deliver 45 hybrid locomotives to Canada

Montreal - Stadler has secured its first locomotive order in Canada, signing a contract to supply 45 hybrid locomotives to VIA Rail Canada. Through a new Canadian subsidiary to be established, the Swiss rail vehicle manufacturer will also provide technical support and spare parts for the fleet over a 20-year period.

( CONNECT ) Stadler Rail has signed a contract to supply 45 hybrid locomotives to VIA Rail Canada , headquartered in Montreal, Quebec. According to a statement from the train manufacturer based in Bussnang in the Swiss canton of Thurgau, the order also includes a 20-year agreement covering technical support and spare parts supply. The services will be delivered by Stadler’s service division through a Canadian subsidiary to be incorporated.

Its employees will be stationed at VIA Rail’s main maintenance sites in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver. “The project will contribute to the development of Canada’s railway industry by creating skilled jobs in manufacturing, testing and maintenance, while supporting the transfer of expertise and advanced railway technologies,” writes the company.

The 45 new locomotives are being designed by Stadler to ensure reliable operation under demanding geographical and climatic conditions, including temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius. They are being developed and built at Stadler Valencia, the company’s locomotive center of excellence, which employs more than 500 engineers.

“Our hybrid locomotive platform combines performance, reliability and sustainability,” summarized Iñigo Parra, Stadler’s Executive Vice President Division Spain. “By integrating battery-assisted operation into a powerful long-distance locomotive, we are providing VIA Rail with a future-oriented solution that supports its environmental objectives while enhancing operational flexibility and passenger service.”

At train stations and in other environmentally sensitive areas, the locomotives can operate in battery mode, significantly reducing noise and exhaust emissions, according to the company. They also recover braking energy, which is stored in the batteries.

As Stadler further emphasizes, the new fleet was designed with sustainability in mind from the outset. The vehicles achieve recycling rates of more than 92 per cent and recovery rates of more than 95 per cent.
