Rock Hill - Octapharma is building a critical care products manufacturing facility in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The human protein manufacturer will invest 1.5 billion US dollars in the project and create 1,500 jobs.

( CONNECT ) Octapharma is building its first US manufacturing facility at Palmetto Research Park in Rock Hill. According to a statement from the family-owned company, headquartered in Lachen in the Swiss canton of Schwyz, the 20-hectare campus for the domestic production of plasma-based therapies and products will cost 1.5 billion US dollars.

The new 20-hectare campus will reportedly represent one of the largest private investments in biomedicine in the state’s history, bringing 1,500 jobs to South Carolina. “The talented workforce, strong life sciences ecosystem, and pro-business environment made it clear this was the right home for our first US manufacturing facility," said Flemming Nielsen, president of Octapharma USA.

Octapharma describes itself as the world’s largest privately held and independent manufacturer of protein products derived from human cell lines and human plasma. Most of the plasma used in its products is sourced from the company’s own 195 donation centers in Europe and the United States. Founded in 1983, the company employs more than 11,000 people at seven research and development sites and five manufacturing facilities in Austria, France, Germany, and Sweden, reads the statement.

In Rock Hill, Octapharma plans to manufacture critical, life-saving medicines from its portfolio. The project will reportedy strengthen the domestic biomedical supply chain while expanding the company’s global production capacity. In addition, the new plant will produce medicines for bleeding control and trauma care.

“We expect significant future growth, driven by our existing life-saving therapies and a strong pipeline of new products,” said Wolfgang Marguerre, founder, CEO and chairman of Octapharma. “Our manufacturing capacity must evolve to support this ambition, and our US manufacturing facility will be an important milestone. From a US national security perspective, having the ability to produce and supply our therapies domestically is invaluable.” ce
