The Englishman finished sixth in his semi-final, while South Africa’s Dambile clocked a 19.82 to top the times into Friday’s final.

Zharnel Hughes failed to reach the men’s 200m athletics final at the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026 , the Englishman finishing sixth in his semi-final on Thursday (30 July) at Scotstoun Stadium.

Hughes, whose 19.73 personal best was the quickest of anyone entered, could manage only 20.67 in the first semi-final, and missed the cut for the eight-man final.

South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile led the qualifiers, winning the third semi-final in 19.82.

“It was pretty good. For me, it was a bonus to race a time like that, to be honest. All I wanted was to qualify. The night was just a bonus for me,” Dambile told Olympics.com afterward. “I wasn’t trying to do that. I was just making sure I secured the spot and felt comfortable. I definitely have a lot left in the tank.”

Canada’s Aaron Brown was second fastest across the three semi-finals in 19.90.

“Feeling good, feeling strong. It was a good run, sub 20. I’m always happy when I do that. I was just looking to get a good time in,” said Brown. “I wanted to clock in and see where I’m at. Looking for a good final.”

Joining them in the final are Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy (20.12), Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor (20.20) and Jevaughn Powell (20.24), Nigeria’s Udodi Onwuzurike (20.22), Ghana’s Joseph Paul Amoah (20.24) and Botswana’s Prince Selepe (20.31).

The final is set for Friday (31 July) at 21:25 local time.
