31.07.2026, 11:46 Uhr Porto - Hydrogen can be fed into the Portuguese gas infrastructure with little to no investment. This has been confirmed following a case study carried out by the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (INEGI). As such, it can play its part in efforts to decarbonize the national energy system.

( CONNECT ) A case study carried out by the Porto-based Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering ( INEGI ) has confirmed that the existing network of gas pipes in Portugal is also suited to carrying hydrogen. The gas supplier Portgás commissioned INEGI to evaluate three key areas: feasibility of injecting hydrogen into the existing gas network, operational requirements and the structural integrity of the materials.

As the institute summarizes in a statement , it developed and set up a customized laboratory and test benches specifically for these investigations. In addition, samples were taken from existing assets so as to examine the effects of hydrogen injection into the gas distribution network on materials, combustion processes and safety and operating conditions. Various components such as valves, sensors and control and metering equipment were evaluated, as were the functionality and performance of end-user equipment. Moreover, the institute assessed the risk of leaks and changes in greenhouse gas emissions.

The case study demonstrates that hydrogen does not negatively impact the structural integrity of the existing infrastructure, while existing components including joint, flanges and hydrogen detection sensors guarantee the safety of the network. The existing gas network allows for the distribution of a mixture of up to 10 percent hydrogen without the need for alterations. With a modest investment estimated at 3 percent of the current asset value, the hydrogen content could be increased to 20 percent, while individual sections could even be converted to 100 percent hydrogen. This would require an estimated investment of 5 percent of the current asset value

According to INEGI, the findings from this case study show that the existing assets of Portgás “allow for the transport of pure hydrogen or hydrogen mixed with natural gas with residual adaptations, confirming the availability of this infrastructure to contribute to the decarbonization of the national energy system”. ce
