Empowered Egypt clinch silver at Boys’ U18 Africa Nations Championship – FIVB
Volleyball Empowerment team Egypt claimed the silver medal at the 2026 CAVB Volleyball Boys’ Under 18 Africa Nations Championship held in Alexandria, Egypt from 20 to 30 July.
It was the sixth silver medal won by the North Africans in the history of the competition. Brazilian coach Percy Oncken is in charge of Egypt’s boys’ and girls’ junior teams as part of a Coach Support project worth 84,000 USD under the Volleyball Empowerment Programme.
Nigeria, who finished the tournament unbeaten, defeated Egypt in straight sets (25-22, 25-21, 25-14) in the final to reclaim the title they last won in 2022. It was the third gold medal for Nigeria who also won the 2020 edition on home soil in Abuja. Cameroon settled for bronze medal, their second in history since 2022.
The top three countries qualified for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ Under 19 World Championship.
With Volleyball Empowerment support, Egypt finished second in Pool A with 6 points from a 2-1 win-loss record, their only defeat coming against Nigeria. The young Pharaohs overcame Algeria by 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-15) in the quarterfinals before edging out Tunisia by 3-2 (16-25, 25-17, 25-14, 21-25, 15-07) in the semifinals to storm the final.
Nigeria once again got the better of Egypt in the final, upgrading their 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 22-25, 25-21) win in the preliminary round to a convincing 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-21, 25-14).
The champions only dropped one set, the 3-1 win over Egypt in the pool phase, in the six matches they played in the entire tournament. After topping Pool A with 9 points from a 3-0 record, Nigeria recorded straight sets wins over Libya (25-08, 25-14, 25-16) and Cameroon (25-16, 25-20, 25-19) in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively.
Cameroon picked themselves up in the third place match to claim the bronze medal following a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-15) sweep of Tunisia.
Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Libya and Burundi, in that order, lined up in the places from fourth to eighth in the final standings.
Nigeria’s Sabi Mora Suleiman headlined the Dream Team as the Most Valuable Player. He was joined by teammates Favour Oreoluwa Adeniyi (Best Setter), Marthins Nnaji Oluebube (Best Middle Blocker) and Ebuka Okonkwo (Best Opposite).
Egypt’s Ghanem Adham, Abdelhamid Ahmed and Kamel Moataz emerged Best Outside Hitter, Best Middle Blocker and Best Libero respectively. Completing the Dream Team was Njikam Ousman from Cameroon as Best Outside Hitter.
