With two golds from two races, the Olympic champion is hoping to have more opportunities to “belt out” the Welsh anthem at Glasgow 2026.

Emma Finucane is no stranger to success but even the seven-time World and three-time Olympic track cycling medallist thoroughly enjoyed one particular moment on the podium at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday (30 July).

That was stepping on the top of the women’s team sprint podium alongside teammates Rhian Edmunds and Lowri Thomas in Glasgow’s iconic Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome , in front of the Scottish legend himself, to sing the Welsh anthem.

“I will be doing that again,” said a smiling Finucane to Olympics.com on Friday before she did exactly that with her second gold medal of the Games, this time in the individual sprint. “I will be belting it out because things like this come and come and go so quickly.

“Like I don’t even remember the last Commonwealth Games, which is really sad.” Finucane was just 19 and an emerging star four years ago at Birmingham 2022 . There, she took two bronze medals in the individual and team sprints but was desperate to win gold for her nation this time out.

“So today and this week I owe it to myself to live in the moment, to take in the crowd, to see my parents, to belt out that anthem as loud as I can, and I will be doing that again tonight (Friday). I really want to live in the moment at this Commonwealth Games, and I’m truly doing that.”

2024 at National Velodrome, Paris. Great Britain claimed Gold with a new World Record time of 45.186 beating New Zealand, while Germany claimed Bronze with a win over the Netherlands.

Finucane will be hoping to live in the moment again at least twice more in Glasgow.

She competes in the women’s 1km time trial on Saturday (1 August) and the women’s keirin on the final day on Sunday, which will be one of the headline events of the four-day track cycling programme.

The two final events are individual races, meaning Finucane will not only be competing against her Welsh team-mates but also two of the Team England cyclists with whom she won Olympic gold at Paris 2024 for Great Britain in the women’s sprint – Sophie Capewell and Katy Marchant .

“I enjoyed every moment out on that track, honestly,” said Finucane of her sprint gold. “It was really, really hard. People said to me I looked like I was in control, but when you’re racing up against teammates who you know inside and out, the pressure does build up and you get nervous. But I went into that final knowing exactly what I needed to do.”

Her opponents will be wary she’ll be thinking exactly the same with two races to go, and with the lure of singing the Welsh national anthem twice more, Finucane will be hard to beat.
