Australia 4x100m relay gold in Glasgow; 38.07s, 0.04s ahead of Canada.

Commonwealth Games 2026: Australia edges out Olympic champions Canada and surging Nigeria in tight men’s 4x100m relay final

Australian anchor Rohan Browning held off Canadian star Andre de Grasse and Nigeria’s Onwuzurike to lead team Australia to gold in the men’s 4x100 relay at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday (1 August) in Glasgow.

Could it get any closer than 0.04 seconds?

That’s all that separated Australia and reigning Olympic champions Canada in the men’s 4x100m relay athletics final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Saturday (1 August).

Running in lane eight, the Australian team of Lachlan Kennedy , Joshua Azzopardi , Calab Law and Rohan Browning , crossed first in 38.07 seconds, followed by Canada in 38.11, Nigeria in 38.12 and Ghana in 38.13.

All four teams were nearly dead-even coming off the final bend, with Browning squeaking ahead of Canadian star Andre De Grasse , Nigerian standout Udodi Onwuzurike and Ghanian anchor Abdul-Rasheed Saminu with a speedy leg and well-timed lean.

“These guys did all the hard work putting me in a winning position," Browning said of his teammates. “All I had do is hold on.”

The win represented a sweet moment of redemption for the two-time Olympian. “Four years ago, I fell over in a heat and got this team DQ’d," he told reporters. “I had to carry the burden of that for the last four years.”

Anchored by seven-time Olympic medallist De Grasse, Canada crossed the finish line second. At first, they were disqualified for a lane infringement, but that was later overturned on appeal, with Olympic champions De Grasse, Jerome Blake , Brendon Rodney and Aaron Brown awarded the silver medal.

Nigeria, originally upgraded from bronze to silver, ultimately occupied the final step on the podium, with Onwuzurike, Favour Ashe , Kayinsola Ajayi and Adekalu Fakorede making up the bronze medal squad.

“We’re heading in the right direction," Onwuzurike told reporters. “These past couple of years have been difficult,” he added, citing difficulties qualifying for the world championships. “To come here and get a medal, [it] feels literally amazing.”

The race was so close he actually believed he’d won gold for Nigeria originally, before the scoreboard informed him otherwise.

“Shout-out to them, for real," he said of the Australian squad. “I didn’t even see them. I thought we won.

“I can only give them respect, because I know how hard it is to run out of lane eight, so proud of them.”

Ghana (38.13), even with the rest off the final bend, were ultimately the odd team out, finishing 0.01 seconds short of a medal once the dust settled at Glasgow 2026.
