Roche and Ivy Tech Community College to jointly train lab technicians

Indianapolis - Roche Diagnostics North America and Ivy Tech Community College are joining forces to address critical workforce shortages in the area of medical laboratory technology in the USA. To this end, Roche is launching a scholarship and career awareness campaign, among other measures. This will be followed by the Roche MedTech Fellows Program for personnel training.

( CONNECT ) Roche Diagnostics North America and Ivy Tech Community College have launched a two-phase program with the aim of counteracting critical workforce shortages in the medical laboratory sector in the USA. As detailed in a statement , Ivy Tech Community College is the largest healthcare trainer in the US State of Indiana, where the headquarters of Roche Diagnostics North America are also located.

In the first phase, Roche, with group headquarters in Basel, is financing a career awareness campaign through to the end of 2026. This is designed to raise awareness among prospective students of a career in the field of medical laboratory diagnostics. In addition, the company is launching the Roche Diagnostics Corporation Scholarship, in which 50 students completing training in medical laboratory technology will each receive 1,000 US dollars in financial support.

The second phase will focus on specific measures to address the shortage of skilled workers in Indiana. The centerpiece of this is the Roche MedTech Fellows Program, which is an “earn-and-learn” model combining paid employment and training in the Medical Laboratory Technology program at Ivy Tech Community College. The program is geared towards individuals with a background in the natural sciences, including students of biology, chemistry and microbiology, or other associated fields. Roche is currently inviting healthcare providers, hospitals, laboratories and other employers to participate in the Fellows Program, so as to play a part in shaping its future success.

The initiative comes on the back of an increasingly acute lack of trained lab technicians. According to information from Roche, around 70 percent of all medical decisions are taken on the basis of lab results. Between January and May, a total of 364 employers in Indiana advertised around 1,635 vacancies for clinical laboratory professionals. At the same time, more than 2,000 individuals currently employed in this field are aged 55 or older, meaning that they will be dropping out of the labor force and entering retirement in the coming years. ce
