Olympic beach volleyball champion Anders Mol to play indoor volleyball: “This isn’t a goodbye to the sand”

Although the Norwegian star will switch sports this year, the Tokyo 2020 gold medallist remains committed to Christian Sørum and the pair’s bid for a third consecutive Olympic medal at LA28.

Anders Mol is taking on a new challenge as he switches the sand for the hard courts.

The two-time Olympic beach volleyball medallist, who won gold with Christian Sørum at Tokyo 2020 in 2021 for Norway, will join Italian indoor volleyball club Rana Verona for the upcoming season.

While Mol will switch his focus after the Elite16 event in Montreal this month, he remains committed to Sørum and the pair’s bid for a third consecutive Olympic medal at LA28 .

“This is an opportunity that I never thought I’d get, and probably won’t get again,” Mol said in a social media statement . “Learning from the very best, gaining new perspectives and becoming a student of the game again feels like a rare opportunity to push myself beyond the comfort zone.”

He continued: “…right now our focus is on ending the season as strong as we can, together. This isn’t a goodbye to the sand, or to Christian. The dream of Olympic gold in LA hasn’t changed, and I believe every lesson from indoors will make me even better in the sand.

Sørum will conclude the season schedule with the Elite16 event in Hamburg (5-9 August), the EuroBeachVolley in Stare Jabłonki (12-16 August), and the Elite16 event in Montreal (19-23 August).

Mol is set to switch from a blocker on the sand to an opposite in the Italian SuperLega. Rana Verona will make their debut in the prestigious CEV Champions League, and will do so with an Olympic gold medallist in their ranks.

The European Championships in Poland will award the first beach volleyball quota* for LA28, obtained by the eventual men’s competition winners and European champions.

*As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective teams at the Olympic Games, athletes’ participation at the LA Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at LA28.
