Athletics: Josh Kerr targets 1500m world record after Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow - exclusive

The mile world record holder says an attempt on the 1500m mark probably won’t come until the middle of the 2027 season, with Olympic gold the last item left on his list.

Josh Kerr has confirmed he’s setting his sights on the 1500 metres world record, but the Scot doesn’t expect to make a serious attempt until midway through 2027.

Speaking to Olympics.com exclusively the morning after winning the men’s mile at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, the athletics star said the 1500m mark is one of two targets he has left, along with an Olympic title at Los Angeles 2028 .

“Next year we have a World Championships that we’ll be working towards, but I have my eyes kind of set on this 1500 world record as well,” Kerr told Olympics.com. “And then Olympic gold is the last thing that I’ve got left to do.”

Asked when and where the attempt might come, Kerr said nothing is settled.

“I’m not too sure of that quite yet, but as soon as I do know, I will let people know,” he said. Kerr had also publicly declared his intention to break the mile world record ahead of the London Diamond League.

“I don’t think this year, if I’m being honest. If anything, it would be next year. It’s very easy to go, ‘OK, I want Olympic gold, I want to run a world record’. It’s easier said than done. I have a lot of work to do before then. So I would say probably middle of the season, 2027 .”
