Based in the Latvian capital of Riga, the non-profit competence center specializes in drone training and promoting collaborations in Europe. It will contribute its training infrastructure, expertise and programs to this new partnership. To this end, the deeptech start-up, which was founded in mid-2025 by three graduates from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich ( ETH ), will create realistic virtual training environments using simulation technology plus geospatial and satellite data. Applications for this technology include protecting critical infrastructure against unmanned threats, adversarial testing and simulations of drone attacks on industrial facilities and energy grids. The growing demand for these applications increases the requirement for qualified drone pilots. In this context, Drone Force – Europe “has what no software company can build alone: real students, highly skilled instructors, and classroom-proven curricula”, as Jack Kendall, co-founder and CEO of nordfen, explains in a report published by startupticker.ch. “We bring the technology to scale it, from piloting skills to drone engineering”. The new training solutions will be designed to be used not only in Latvia, but also across the whole of Europe. The entry into the Latvian market of nordfen is being supported by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia . “The fact that a Swiss start-up emerging from the ETH Zurich innovation ecosystem is investing in Latvia is confirmation of the high level of expertise in the area of drone technology that Latvia offers”, comments Deputy Director Laura Štrovalde. “I am convinced that this Memorandum of Understanding marks the beginning of a new phase in innovation cooperation between Latvia and Switzerland”. Since May 2026, nordfen has been part of the 20th cohort of ESA BIC Switzerland , the local accelerator program of the European Space Agency ( ESA ).
