Singapore - American tech developer Iron Software is partnering with Singaporean nongovernment organization Seven Clean Seas and Buddhist monks to collect plastic waste in the Chao Phraya River in Thailand. The partnership’s barrier is expected to collect 200 tons of plastic annually before it pollutes the Gulf of Thailand.

( CONNECT ) Around 70 percent of maritime plastic pollution originates in rivers. Thailand’s Chao Phraya River, for example, carries plastic for hundreds of miles before it reaches the ocean. Now Iron Software , a Chicago-based tech developer, and Seven Clean Seas , a South Asian environmental group, are partnering to install a river barrier that is expected to collect 200 tons of plastic waste on Chao Phraya annually for recycling, said a July 30 statement .

“This isn't a one-off. It's part of how we operate," said Iron Software Chief Executive Officer Cameron Rimington. "We've supported different initiatives, volunteered, and we run an EcoGrant program. We've committed over $50,000 to environmental causes over the years. We have no plans to stop. As the company grows, these commitments grow with it.”

Buddhist monks at a nearby temple will convert the plastic into polyester and dye the textile orange to make their robes. Designed to withstand monsoon conditions, the barrier will capture plastic traveling in the river and report data to the 124 Seven Clean Seas cleaning staffers who will collect the waste. These workers can earn significantly more than their wages in local informal economies.

"If you draw a map of poverty and overlay it with a map of plastic leakage, the same places light up," said Seven Clean Seas Chief Executive Officer Tom Peacock-Mayson. "The underlying problem driving plastic pollution is poverty. We need to support people – less tech, more people."

A Seven Clean Seas team of 20 people will also collect waste from mangroves that are also trapping plastic. Lastly, the nonprofit will deploy a 13-meter, solar-powered catamaran called The Hippo that uses a 2-meter conveyor belt to pick up plastic. ce
