Gymnastics: Jayla Hang returns on beam at U.S. Championships as she works back from injury

The Pan American all-around champion makes a measured comeback in Phoenix, contesting balance beam only as she targets a full return later this year.

The 2025 Pan American Championships all-around winner Jayla Hang is back on the competition floor – but, for now, just in one event.

The American gymnast will contest balance beam only at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Phoenix this week, a measured return as she recovers from a wrist injury that has kept her out of competition in 2026 until this point.

"Everything's been on schedule and healing as it should. She's been fully cleared by her doctor, and we're following a really close plan from her PT as far as progressing her back," Pacific Reign Gymnastics coach Cale Robinson told Olympics.com.

Her beam routine in Phoenix will feature a side aerial layout series, an upgrade aimed at a long-term routine. That's in place of her usual back handspring, tucked full, which she is already practicing on the floor.

And, while she’ll dismount with just a round off layout, she has been training her typical double pike at home.

"Really this opportunity is just about her competing again and finding the joy, being back out in this environment and being with her teammates," said Robinson.

Outside official practices, Hang will workout at 1996 Olympic gold medallist Amanda Borden ’s Gold Medal Gymnastics in nearby Chandler to utilize softer training landings with a fuller return close.

Robinson expects Hang to have "all of her skills back that she was doing before" on the other three apparatus within a month, with the larger goal – the Olympic Games LA28 – still two years away.

"She had a choice and this is the choice she wanted to make," said Robinson. "I'm happy to just see her embracing the moment for what it is."
