GB1 announced the addition of Lines, a former kitefoiler for the British Sailing Team, on Tuesday (4 August).

For the first time in 90 years, Great Britain will field an America’s Cup team featuring a woman.

Jemima Lines , a former British Sailing Team kitefoiler, was announced as the latest edition to the GB1 team that will travel to Naples, Italy, next year to compete in the 38th America’s Cup.

The last woman to make an appearance was Phyllis Sopwith , who appeared in both 1934 and 1937.

"It has been a long time coming," Lines told BBC Sport . "It is incredible, what a moment in history and it is just so exciting, I think it is a pivotal moment for our sport really.

"It honestly is a massive honour and quite surreal. If you had told me that growing up I wouldn't have believed it."

This is the first time in the 175-year history that a woman is a required member of the five-person crew.

Lines notably served as a back-up to gold medallist Ellie Aldridge at the 2024 Olympics Games in Paris.

The 29-year-old joins Ben Cornish , Dylan Fletcher , Bleddyn Mon and Andrea Tesei for the 2027 competition. Racing will begin in May, and the event will host its final match over two days from 10-11 July.
