Gymnastics: Leanne Wong withdraws from U.S. Championships with knee injury

The two-time world all-around silver medallist hyperextended her knee in podium training and will not compete in Phoenix.

Two-time world all-around silver medallist Leanne Wong will not compete at this week’s U.S. Gymnastics Championships, pulling out of the meet in Phoenix, Arizona, with a knee injury.

Wong announced the news on Instagram on Wednesday (5 August), two days before the senior women take the floor. She reportedly hurt the knee in podium training on Tuesday (4 August).

“This isn’t how I wanted this week to go, but I trust that God’s plan is greater than my own,” she wrote. “I’m grateful for a strong week of training leading up to this competition. Unfortunately, I hyperextended my knee during yesterday’s podium training and will need to rest and recover .”

“Thank you all for the love and support,” she added, addressing the tight-knit gymnastics community. “I’m looking forward to what’s ahead and trusting the process. Wishing all the competitors the very best this week!”

Coming into the U.S. Championships, Wong was dealing with a wrist injury that had held her to only balance beam at July’s U.S. Classic.

Wong will still have a chance to petition to the U.S. women’s world selection competition in late September.
