The Stars and Stripes waved and high and proud at Hayward Field as Team USA ran away with the mixed 4x400m title in a time of 3:15.31 on Wednesday, 5 August.

The roar of the home crowd could be heard outside the confines of Hayward Field as Team USA closed day one of the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships with a record-breaking performance in the mixed 4x400m relay in Eugene, Oregon.

Spontaneous chants of "USA! USA! USA!" broke out around the spiritual home of track and field in the United States as the team of Joshua Shelton , Taylor-Nicole Overton , Jaelen Hunter and Olivia Harris won the event in a championship record of 3:15.31 on Wednesday (5 August).

A monstrous second leg from Overton ensured there was no one in sight as Harris rounded the final bend, giving the team a chance to soak up the moment as she strode down the home stretch and crossed the finish line to secure the title.

"I knew I just had to hold the lead they all gave me and finish strong, because that's what it's going take to get the record and win overall," Harris said after the race, noting the team had manifested the record long before the starter's gun sounded.

"We've been saying it from this morning (in the first round) that we were going to beat it, so we just trusted our training and knew what we had to do." Adding on to that, Shelton quipped, " manifestation is key! "

Much had been made of the decision to run 400m hurdler Natalie Dumas in the first round, before 400m specialist Overton replaced her for the second leg in the final.

"I think she'll be fresher for her individual event," Overton said of the decision. "It was a good sub. I took her spot, but I still tried to make sure that we kept the group together and that we had good chemistry." All five athletes received winner's medals for their efforts on the track.

Asked what tone their record-setting performance set for the rest of the championships, all four members of the final squad agreed, "everyone's going to go crazy now."

Runner-up medals were claimed by Czechia in a national U20 record of 3:19.59, after they edged out Australia in a sprint, with the Aussies producing an Oceanian U20 area record of 3:18.75.

Jamaica went home without any medals, finishing fourth in national U20 record of 3:18.78.
