Kanadevia Inova to build waste incineration plant in Morocco

Osaka - Kanadevia Inova has signed a concession agreement for a major waste-to-energy project in the Moroccan port city of Casablanca. Together with partners, the Zurich-based company will build and operate the facility located adjacent to one of Africa’s largest landfill sites.

( CONNECT ) Kanadevia Inova AG has signed a 33.5-year project and operations contract for a waste-to-energy plant in Casablanca. The agreement covers the design, financing, construction and operation of the facility, which, as detailed in a statement , is scheduled to start generating energy out of waste from June 2030 onwards. The Zurich-based company, which specializes in waste-to-energy and biogas plants, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Kanadevia Corporation from Osaka, one of Japan’s major industrial groups.

For this project, Kanadevia Inova will establish a Special Purpose Company (SPC), in which Nareva , one of Africa’s largest sustainable energy and desalination companies based in Casablanca, and the Japanese wholesaler Itochu will both hold stakes. The SPC will be tasked with implementing the project and concluding the contracts for engineering services, procurement and construction, in addition to long-term maintenance agreements.

The new facility will generate approximately 1 terawatt-hour of electricity per annum, which corresponds to the annual electricity demand of around 1 million people. It will be equipped with combustion and boiler systems and the Autaro automatic combustion control system from Kanadevia Inova. Moreover, the project includes a 50-megawatt solar plant, a 4-megawatt landfill gas recovery and utilization plant, as well as a leachate treatment plant.

According to the information, the plant will also be designed in such a way to facilitate the integration of CO2 capture and storage technologies in the future. This should help to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support decarbonization efforts. ce
