German passenger car market: Share of electric vehicles rises to 41%
New passenger car registrations up – strong growth in new electric vehicle registrations – production down year-to-date – high order backlog
In July, 322,700 passenger cars were produced in Germany. This is 6% less than in July of the previous year. The main reason is a production stoppage lasting several weeks during the retooling of a plant for electric vehicle manufacturing. So far this year, 2.43mn passenger cars have been produced in Germany, 3% fewer than in the same period last year. Consequently, production after the first seven months of the current year stands 15% below the level of the pre-crisis year 2019.
Exports in July stood at 260,000 units, 4% below the figure for the same month last year. Since January of this year, 1.852mn passenger cars have been exported – likewise 4% less than in the same period last year.
Domestic orders received in July were 4% lower than in the same month last year. At the same time, orders from abroad were 15% below the previous year’s figure. Overall—combining domestic and foreign orders—13% fewer orders were recorded in July than in July 2025. To complete the picture, the current domestic order backlog stands 10% above the previous year’s level. This represents the largest gap compared to the prior-year figure seen this year and is likely to provide a boost to domestic production following the summer months.
New passenger car registrations rose by 1% in July compared to the same month last year, reaching a volume of 268,100 units. A total of 1.75mn units were newly registered in the first seven months of this year – 5% more than in the corresponding period of the previous year. However, the market remains well below pre-crisis levels from 2019, trailing by around 20% after the first seven months.
New registrations of electric vehicles (BEV, PHEV, FCEV) rose by 44% last month, reaching a volume of 109,200 units. At 41%, the share of electric vehicles in total registrations reached its highest level since the reduction of the environmental bonus at the end of 2022 and the second-highest level ever recorded. Specifically, BEV registrations saw above-average growth of 62%, rising to 78,600 units. New registrations of PHEVs recorded more moderate growth of 13%, reaching 30,600 vehicles. In the first seven months of the current year, the electric passenger car market reached a volume of 641,000 units – an increase of 38% compared to the same period last year. Year-to-date figures show a 50% rise in new BEV registrations to 446,600 units. The PHEV segment grew by 17% during the first seven months of the year, reaching a volume of 194,400 vehicles.
