SFE11020 British Literature (Autumn 2026)

The course is affiliated to the following study programme

Mandatory course in the One-year English Programme (full-time and part-time).

Mandatory course in the 60 ECTS part of the Bachelor's Programme in Languages for students with English as one of their chosen languages.

One-year English programme: 1st semester (autumn).

Bachelor's Programme in Languages with English as one of their chosen languages: 1st or 3rd semester (autumn).

The student's learning outcomes on passing the course

has knowledge and understanding of British literature.

has knowledge of literary periods, genres and topics in British literature.

has analytical skills and the ability for critical reflection when encountering literary texts.

is capable of studying literary works in the context of their history.

has improved their skills in written argumentation and oral discussion in English.

is capable of using the MLA style of referencing.

is capable of independent and critical thinking through analysis of British literature.

masters research techniques for searching, evaluating and using secondary literature accessible online and at the university college's library.

Teaching varies between online lectures, seminars, talks and activities in small groups. The students are expected to read the course material every week and take active part in online discussions and group assignments. Students are encouraged to study in groups, where they can go through the literature and work together on assignments outside the scheduled teaching sessions. Each student is required to keep their webcamera and microphone turned on when participating in online classes.

The course will include the opportunity to visit the Norwegian Study Centre in York for one week of physical classes. This is usually in week 41.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

One individual written assignment with an extent of 3-4 pages.

The required coursework is assessed as approved

not approved. Required coursework must be approved before the student can take the exam.

The examination consists of two parts: A written part that counts 25% of the grade, and an oral part that counts 75% of the grade. Both partial exams must be passed in order to pass the course.

Part 1: Individual written home exam, 1 hour duration.

All aids are allowed, except from communication and collaboration with others on the answer. The examination assignment may further regulate the use of certain aids, for example the use of GenAI.

Part 2: Individual oral exam, 20 minutes duration.

One overall grade is awarded for the course, using the grading scale A-F.
