The season’s third Grand Smash returns to Malmö Arena from 8–16 August, with Sweden’s men’s world No. 2 Truls Möregårdh defending the title he won on home soil last year. Here’s everything you need to know.

A year on from one of the biggest nights of his career, Truls Möregårdh is back at Malmö Arena as the man everyone wants to beat.

The second edition of the WTT Europe Smash runs from 8–16 August 2026, and the Swede arrives as both defending champion and top seed.

Europe Smash is the third of the season’s four table tennis Grand Smashes, following Singapore in February and the United States Smash in Ontario, California, at the turn of July. China Smash closes the set in October.

Stars to watch at Europe Smash 2026

Möregårdh is the biggest name Swedish table tennis has produced in a generation. At Paris 2024 he reached the men’s singles final and lost 4-1 to the People’s Republic of China’s Fan Zhendong , taking silver. He won a second silver in the team event alongside Anton Källberg and Kristian Karlsson , both of whom are also in the draw here.

A year ago, in this same arena, he went one better. Möregårdh beat Lin Shidong , then the world No. 1, in the Europe Smash final. He led 3-1, was pulled back to 3-3, and took the deciding game 11-9. He is ranked second in the world now, and tops the seedings in Malmö because current world No. 1 Wang Chuqin isn’t playing. No European had won a Grand Smash title prior to Möregårdh, and now he bids to be the first to successfully defend a Grand Smash title too.

So who can stop him? Matsushima Sora is the man in form. The 19-year-old from Japan won the United States Smash in July, including beating Paris 2024 bronze medallist Félix Lebrun in the semi-finals, for the first Grand Smash title of his career. He is world No. 3 and the second seed this week.

France brings two more contenders in the Lebrun brothers. Félix Lebrun , the third seed, won singles bronze at Paris 2024 and is ranked fourth in the world. Older brother Alexis Lebrun , a team bronze medallist at the same Games, is ranked 10th.

The Men’s Singles Table Tennis Gold Medal Match was held on 04

2024 at South Paris Arena 4, Paris. Fan Zhendong (CHN) claimed the Gold with a 4:1 victory against Truls Moregard (SWE).

The women’s draw changed shape late. Sun Yingsha , the world No. 1, withdrew on 2 August with an injury.

The Chinese player won mixed doubles and team gold at Paris 2024, plus singles silver, and would have arrived as the champion from last month’s US Smash. Australia’s Jee Minhyung replaces her in the main draw.

That leaves Wang Manyu as the highest-ranked woman in Malmö. She is world No. 2 and was part of the Chinese team that won gold in Paris. Six more Chinese players join her, among them Kuai Man , who took Sun to seven games in the US Smash final.

Japan’s Harimoto Miwa , ranked third, leads the challenge from outside China. Germany’s Sabine Winter is the highest-ranked European at No. 8.
