World Athletics U20 Championships 2026: Mia Maxwell beats Shanoya Douglas to claim women’s 200m title

The 18-year-old from Texas bookended a night of Team USA excellence in Eugene, clocking a personal best of 22.37 seconds on Saturday, 8 August.

Mia Maxwell claimed a sprint double at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships , posting a time of 22.37 seconds in the women’s 200m final on Saturday (8 August).

While she trailed Jamaica’s Shanoya Douglas heading down the home straight, Maxwell found an extra bit of speed in the closing metres, pushing ahead of her Caribbean rival when it mattered most.

“Man, I was literally just worried about myself,” she said of those tense final few metres. “I was really focused on my execution and not worrying about anyone else, and that was the outcome.”

Unable to match the final acceleration of Maxwell, Jamaica’s Douglas crossed the finish line second in 22.68 , with Maxwell’s twin sister Mariah upgrading from fifth in the 100m to third in 22.77 , making the medal ceremony a family affair.

“It was special seeing my mom crying, and my family supporting us every step of the way,” Mia added. “At the beginning of this year I was going through mental and physical struggles, so to have this moment and share it with my family is really special.”

Mia’s win also meant that she became the first female athlete from Team USA to sweep the U20 sprint titles, achieving the feat on the same night Tate Taylor became the first man to do so.

“This is just the beginning of both me and Tate’s future in the sport” she said. “I’m glad I executed everything well and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

Confirming their celebration plans shortly after the race, Mariah stated, “We have been training all year. [This] is so special. It is unexplainable. We are going to get ice cream and enjoy the rest of summer.”
