History repeated itself at Hayward Field, as Eugene Diamond League 200m winner Taylor strode to victory in the men’s 200m final on Saturday, 8 August.
Just as South Africa’s Bayanda Walaza had two years ago in Lima, Team USA’s Tate Taylor officially claimed the 100m and 200m double at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene.
Powering metres ahead of his nearest rival, the 18-year-old Texas-born sprinter asserted his authority over the half lap sprint, clocking a championship record of 19.83 seconds on Saturday (8 August).
“All glory to God, he brought me here and I understand that as long as I trust in him – prayed about it, understood what I was capable of doing – he was going to pull me through once again,” Taylor told reporters.
Becoming the first male athlete from Team USA to complete the U20 sprint double, he added: “It means a lot. I am super proud of myself and this team, and the guy next to me ( Blake Hamilton ).”
Chasing Taylor’s shadow all the way down the home stretch, Team USA’s Hamilton finished second in 20.31 , followed by Barbados’ Jayden Green in 20.55 . The trio ranked exactly the same way they did in the semi-finals the day prior (Friday, 7 August).
“It is a true blessing to be out here and win a medal on home soil,” said Blake. “I felt like my performance could have been better, but nevertheless, I am proud of myself.
“Second in the world is something not a lot of people can say,” he added, joking, “Running next to Tate is something not a lot of people can say [as well].”
Concluding a long season, Barbados’ Green was just happy to represent his nation on the podium: “I am grateful to be here on the world stage to compete for my country and to win a medal.
“Our future is very bright, [and] even though we may not have as many people as America, I know Barbados can produce talent and it pushes me to get better.”
