Jazmin Sawyers is back, and not only that, she’s back to her best. For years, the Olympic long jumper has chased the top position at a major championship. There were the heartbreaks of placing just outside the podium – finishing fourth in the Commonwealths in Birmingham in 2022 – and not reaching the final at the 2023 World Championships . And then there was 2024, when Sawyers ruptured her Achilles tendon in her take-off leg, which forced her to miss the Olympic Games Paris 20 24 . But these setbacks appear to have only set the stage for an impressive comeback. The 32-year-old heads into the European Championships 2026 between 10-16 August following her gold medal-winning performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Saturday, 1 August. Sawyers needed four jumps for the winning mark of 6.93 metres and to edge out Nigeria's Ruth Usoro (6.87m) and Brooke Buschkuehl of Australia (6.80m). This is merely the first step towards her ultimate goal of making it to LA28 . "Last time I was here in Glasgow for the Commonwealths, it was silver," Sawyers told Olympics.com. "So then the only one thing to do really is upgrade. It took me a little while. It took three more goes, but I got it. " That's the dream. That's the reason that I rehabbed a ruptured Achilles is because I want another shot at the Olympics . I just love this life. This is the coolest thing I could possibly think of getting to do, and it's easier to say that when I've won, but even when I don't win, it's still better than anything else I could think of. The Olympics has been a dream since I knew what they were." (Photo by Paul Harding Past life as a Youth Olympic bobsleigh silver medallist If Sawyers has one piece of advice for aspiring young athletes, it’s to try new things. Even a sport that may not seem in line with ones’ present interest, give it a go, and they may find themselves pleased by the results. “I just like to try things,” Sawyers said. “I think it's a good thing, especially for a young athlete, to try as many things as possible. You don't necessarily know what your thing is, because maybe you just haven't tried it yet.” That’s more or less how Sawyers, who was initially interested in gymnastics, then the heptathlon, became a Youth Olympic silver medallist in bobsleigh. The British Bobsleigh team came to Sawyers' Olympic training school and tested students' metrics in the 30m sprint, standing long jump and standing vertical jump. Sawyers was an immediate standout, as she was already completing those workouts in her training. When broached about joining the team, she thought to herself, 'Why not?' “I was a heptathlete at the time,” Sawyers said. “That was the only thing I wanted to be in the Olympic school. That was also not going to work out. And I thought, ‘Go on, I'll have a go. I've seen Cool Runnings. I did. Made the team and we got a silver – me and Mica McNeill (at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck.)” And despite not competing in the event for years, the door isn’t shut on a return to bobsleigh, and it would be a welcome opportunity, if it ever presented itself. “I would love to get back to bobsleigh at some point,” Sawyers said. I don't know if that's something that could or will ever happen, but that was my first Olympic experience and it was magic. I had the time of my life.
